City firefighters found a body this morning in the Kuilsriver area– it is thought to be that of a person who fell into the Highbury canal during inclement weather on Thursday, 18 July.
The body was found by firefighters from the City's Kuilsriver Fire Station, and SAPS was alerted to lead the recovery.

Since the incident, the City availed its Fire & Rescue swift water rescue team, the Law Enforcement Marine and Environmental Unit, and the use of a drone.
'Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family, while we wait for confirmation from SAPS. I want to thank everyone involved in the four-day search. This was the second such incident in the space of a week in our city, during a time when Cape Town has been grappling with the impacts of severe weather. Also, this weekend, a man drowned after the vehicle he was traveling in became submerged in a wetland along Spine Road extension. Our waterways remain at capacity, and this will likely be the situation for a while still. I want to caution the public to please be incredibly careful at all times,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
In general enforcement operations over the past week, the City's agencies arrested 245 suspects and issued 41 698 fines.
Metro Police officers arrested 43 suspects and issued 3 470 traffic and by-law fines
On Saturday, 21 July 2024, officers arrested a suspect for illegal possession of drugs in Wynberg, after a tip off about drugs being sold from a vehicle parked on the corners of Park and Kent Roads.
Officers recovered 40 whole mandrax tablets as well as 67 sachets of tik with an estimated street value of R8 300. A 54-year-old suspect was arrested and detained at Wynberg SAPS for further investigation.
LAW ENFORCEMENT
Officers arrested 177 suspects and issued 3 097 fines during enforcement operations.
During a zero tolerance enforcement operation on Friday night, 19 July 2024, Law Enforcement officers together with the South African Police Service were deployed in the Kleinvlei area.
Various businesses and other premises were searched, with officers arresting two suspects – one for the possession of a dangerous weapon and the other for the illegal possession of 20 Mandrax tablets.
TRAFFIC SERVICE
During weekly patrols traffic officers issued 35 131 fines, impounded115 public transport vehicles and executed 1 539 warrants of arrest
Officers also arrested 25 suspects of which 17 were for driving under the influence of alcohol, three for reckless and negligent driving and five for other offences which included submitting false documentation, assaulting an officer and possession of a stolen vehicle.
PUBLIC EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION CENTRE
The PECC recorded 1 488 incidents this weekend, including 84 assault cases.
Call takers also logged 38 motor vehicle accidents and 12 motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians.
